Marilyn Monroe is one of the most well-known Hollywood stars in history. She was an icon, a trailblazer, and incredibly important in changing the attitude towards sexuality in the 1950’s and 60’s. Though her life and career were tragically short; the impact she made on the world has reverberated through time and space, into something we still feel, still talk about, today. A lot of us may have become familiar with her through her famous quotes and sayings, having seen them shared all over social media at some point or another. Although her iconic sayings can be done to death, I think we can always find an appreciation for them and Miss Monroe herself. I’ve picked out some of my favorite quotes from her, and I’m going to share them with you today.
This is probably one of my favorite Marilyn Monroe quotes. I absolutely adore this one because she’s telling us to love who we are, fully embrace ourselves and all of our quirks. Our weirdness, our craziness—that’s what makes us different. Besides, who really wants to live their life drawing inside the lines?
Another gem from Marilyn Monroe! Even back in the 50’s and 60’s, at a time where women were beginning to find their footing in a smale-dominated world; she knew that gender stereotypes and limitations were just that—nothing else. She knew she had the power to do what she wanted, and she most definitely wasn’t going to let the fact that she was a female hold her back. She embraced her femininity and sexuality, never giving into limitations, and setting the world on fire in her wake.
I think this one’s pretty self explanatory, but I had to add it in here because I love it so much.
This quote is so reassuring. We all struggle sometimes, we all have little pieces of ourselves that are broken. Sometimes we make mistakes, we do fall down, and we do fail—but it’s what you do after those mistakes, those falls, those fails; that matters. You have to keep trying, and always believe in yourself. “And always, always, always, believe in yourself, because if you don’t, then who will?” Goes along with the idea that you can’t give love to someone else until you give love to yourself first. People get behind others when they can see that they truly believe in themselves and what they’re doing. We’re all more transparent than we’d like to think, people can see when we’re unsure of ourselves. Once you believe in yourself, nothing else matters.
I wasn’t alive during the time Marilyn Monroe was, but I’m 100% positive almost everyone had an opinion about her. I’m sure men and women alike made assumptions, judged her, maybe even wrote about her negatively in a newspaper or something; but Marilyn Monroe’s saying that at the end of the day, people are going to judge what they want, see what they want, think what they want, but it doesn’t matter. She’s not going to sink to the level of those people. She knows that she won’t change their mind no matter what because they’ve already made up their minds. I think this is something we should all try to remember, too. Judgmental people see a reflection of themselves and their insecurities when they look at you. Judging someone is only shining a light on your own negativity. Don’t let yourself get caught up in all of that.
