My Bedtime Routine

My Bedtime Routine

Sleep is vital in living a healthy life. As I’ve gotten into my mid-20’s I’ve begun to appreciate sleep in ways I never did before. A good night’s sleep helps my brain feel refreshed, and my body energized the following day. I can think clearer, move better, and get more done. Since I’m a creature of habit and love daily routines, I wanted to share my bedtime routine with all of you. This is what’s worked for me. Comments, Instagram DM’s, and tweets are as always welcome, I’d love to hear if you guys agree, or what you do to get ready for bed!

10:15-10:30 P.M: go upstairs + start getting ready for bed

I’m a mixture of a night owl and a morning person. Growing up, my family always ate dinner later in the evening, so I’ve stuck to that routine as an adult. I usually try to eat dinner with my boyfriend between eight and nine o’clock, and we watch a TV show until around 10.

10:30 P.M: put on pajamas, take medicine + vitamins

For as long as I can remember, I’ve suffered from chronic insomnia. When I was about 7 or 8 years old, my parents made me go to bed at 7:00 one summer because I had such trouble sleeping. The insomnia only got worse as I got older, and my sleep became so broken once I got into high school that I finally was put on sleeping medicine when I was 16. I still take that medicine to this day, and the improved quality of life I’ve had from it is something I can’t even begin to put into words. So, every night, after I’ve changed out of my normal clothes and into my pajamas, I take my sleeping medicine and my various vitamins. My vitamins include: B2, magnesium, vitamins for hair, Zyrtec (not really a vitamin but whatever LOL), and selenium.

10:45 P.M: plug phone in, brush teeth, wash face + moisturize

For some reason, when I get really tired, I have a tendency to get distracted really easily, ultimately and keep myself up longer because of it. So, after I’ve taken my medicine and changed into my pajamas, I make sure to plug my phone in so I’m not tempted to try to multi-task while brushing my teeth or washing my face. I brush my teeth first, then wash my faces, then moisturize.

11:00 P.M: get in bed + read

This is my favorite part of the night! Reading helps my mind unwind and relax before bed, and helps me sleep more restfully and peacefully. I try to read for an hour, but when I want to go longer and sneak in a few more pages (which happens quite often, if I’m being completely honest), my boyfriend is right next to me (reading his own book, a couple that reads together, stays together, right?) to remind me that I need to go to sleep.

Midnight: selenite wand + bedtime

I love crystals and their healing powers. I try to clear both mine and my boyfriends’ auras every night before bed by taking a selenite wand and waving it down our bodies, hitting all of our chakras. After, we both get into bed, I turn on my sound soother using the Relax Melodies app on my phone, and I allow myself to drift off into dreamland.
