The cold brings a lot of things, and two of them are drier skin and hair. It’s not uncommon for hair to become flat and frizzy during the wintertime, nor is it uncommon for our skin to feel like it needs a major burst of hydration from time to time. In this post, I’m sharing my hacks for keeping skin and hair glowing during the wintertime. I also take you through a step-by-step tutorial of my skin care routine in the video below, or you can click here for the direct link.
Skin hacks
Take a dewy/hydrating setting spray and spray onto your face before you apply your serums or moisturizers for the day. The spray will give your skin an extra boost of hydration, and also help prep the rest of your skin care routine. Throughout the day, give yourself another spritz of hydration again. Try to do this 2-3x a day, including the time before you do your normal skin care. I love and use this e.l.f dewy setting mist. It smells great, feels refreshing, and is super hydrating.
If you feel like your skin is staying dry, try switching to cold water when you wash your face. Extra moisture and heat will suck out the natural moisture your skin is retaining, thus making it more dry. After you get out of the shower (especially if you’re taking a warm/hot one), make sure you take a face cloth with cold water to your face. Don’t forget to be gentle! I was my face with cold water morning and night.
If you feel like you have a buildup of blackheads on or around your t-zone area, use a nose strip once a week before bed. (Just make sure your nose isn’t extra dry before you do!) After, wash your face normally and apply your nighttime skin care routine, minus the t-zone area. This will allow your pores to breathe overnight. I use Bioré deep cleansing charcoal nose strips.
Hair hacks
Let conditioner sit in your hair when you’re in the shower. Don’t wash up until after you’ve applied the conditioner evenly throughout your hair. Allowing the conditioner to sit will help lock in moisture in your hair. Once you’re done washing up, take more conditioner in your hands, and rinse out your hair with more conditioner. This will help give hair extra smoothness and shine, and is also really beneficial. I’ve noticed my hair is noticeably softer when I do this. I wash my hair twice a week, and use this hack each time.
Before you use any heat on your hair, add some Moroccan oil; it doesn’t have to be a lot, either! The oil will help keep shine and add another layer of protection against your straightener or other tools that use heat.
Even on the days you’re not using any heat on your hair, be sure to add a little drop of Moroccan oil to it throughout. The Moroccan oil nourishes your hair (which is especially helpful if you don’t have your natural hair color!), while also helping to fight off the dryness, flatness, and friziness that the cold weather brings. I swear by this Moroccan oil. It’s light on your hair, lasts a really long time, and smells amazing. A little bit goes a long way!
