How to Decorate Without Breaking the Bank

How to Decorate Without Breaking the Bank

One of the most exciting parts of being a home owner is having free reign to decorate your home to your liking. Our homes are a place we can make our sanctuary, but what happens when we begin mapping out our décor dreams, only to find out it’s going to break the bank?

Furnishing a home is expensive in and of itself, never mind adding our personal touches to it. I’ve had times where I’ve gone down the rabbit hole of piling things into my online shopping cart, only to realize at the end the exorbitant amount of money I’m going to be spending is kind of ridiculous. Of course everyone wants to make their home their sanctuary, but unless you’re absolutely rolling in the dough, that task may be looming over your head, proving to be more difficult than you originally thought. Well, I’m here to tell you that yes, it can be done. You can furnish your home, add your personal touches to it, and not break the bank. Here’s how.

Buy in bulk

Whatever you’re buying, try to buy it in bulk. I love having extra things in case I ever want to switch something out or have an idea for a placement elsewhere. Don’t go crazy—you don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars—but if it’s something you really want, buy two or three. Having extras gives you the option to switch things out in the future, or place them elsewhere in your home. Also, if you’re online shopping, buying in bulk may help save you money with shipping; almost every online retailer has free shipping over a certain amount of money spent. If spending another $10 will save you money on $8 shipping, do it.

Buy bigger decorations

In the middle of my kitchen table is a beautiful decanter set my boyfriend purchased many years ago. At his old house, he kept it on his desk, but now it serves as a beautiful centerpiece. Things like this are great because they take up a lot of room and don’t need anything else to accent them.

Simplicity + minimalist aesthetic

You don’t need a lot of money or fancy things to make your home look swoon-worthy. Try sticking to a minimalist aesthetic throughout your home. This will give a modern vibe, while going along with minimal décor. Simplicity is key if you’re trying to save money. Start small: add decorations to each room little by little. In the meantime, enjoy having a clean, soulless living space.

Make do with what you have

All I ever hear in the world is “want, want, want.” Someone wants this, someone wants that. For the sake of being blunt: we all want, but we have to make do with what we have. Everyone starts somewhere—even the rich. You have no control over where you’re born or what you’re born into, but you do have control of where you end up. Try to remember this when decorating your home. Don’t let your interior design dreams get away from you: stick to what you can afford while working towards your end goal. Don’t allow yourself to get greedy, if you have a roof over your head, be thankful for it.

Like I said above, you don’t need a lot of money to add your own touch to your home. You can use almost anything as a decoration—there’s no wrong way to decorate your space!

Now that I’ve gone over ways to decorate your home on a budget and without breaking the bank, here are some ideas to get you started:

My living room coffee table

  • Candles: not only do they smell good, but you’ll never run out of an occasion to use them. Yankee Candle has really good sales often, and their candles not only look nice, they’re top quality, too. Use candles throughout your home for a calming, pleasing aesthetic. If you have extras and don’t know where to put them, stash them away for a later time!
  • Library books: fashion books on coffee tables or vanities is a huge trend right now, but those coveted books are more expensive than you’d think. (Trust me, I’ve checked. Multiple times.) Instead, take a library book and place it on your coffee table as well. Whenever I have a book about crystals I always leave it there next to my candles, and it matches with the overall theme, since I have crystals on my coffee table. Helpful and resourceful books are great to have on-hand so you can pick them up whenever you need to.
My kitchen table
  • Place mats: these have the ability to transform your kitchen table from basic to stunning. A simple place mat gives the home a furnished, adult feel; and also creates the illusion that it’s more decked out than it actually is. Nothing is more displeasing than a bare kitchen table. Hint: try matching the place mats to your dishes; it makes everything look more uniformed and sleek!
  • Cloth napkins: not only do they look fancy, they’re also reusable! Use them whenever you’re having a homemade date night to make it feel fancier, or whenever you have guests over. When you’re done, you can just throw them in the wash and you’re good to go! Hint: try matching the cloth napkins to your place mats for a unified effect.
  • Artificial flowers/plants: small artificial flowers or plants when placed correctly can breathe life back into a room. Try buying ones that come in vases to save yourself the trouble. Start small before moving to artificial floor plants to see how you like them, and how they fit into the style of your home!
  • Perfume + cologne bottles: these look great next to any vanity or atop any dresser!
My office desk/vanity
  • Makeup stands: use a makeup stand to organize makeup and decorate your office desk, vanity, or bureau! Not only will everything look neat and pretty, it’ll also serve as a subtle decoration while keeping things organized for you!
