Revolutionary Sexual Wellness Trends for 2026:

Using technology for casual sex

Obviously, having sex casually isn’t new. But using technology to find casual hookups is. Applied futurist Tom Cheesewright says technology has fragmented the dating and hookup scenes. Consequently, finding people with similar interests and expectations in bed is easier. “You can search for just about any niche interest online now and find people who share it,” Cheesewright explains. “And those mutual interests might include sex purely for fun.”

That said, honesty is the best policy. If you’re using apps and platforms to find casual hookups, be upfront with matches about what you’re looking for. Not only will this avoid any confusion between you, but it will also prevent you from wasting each other’s time.

Sexual tension in gaming

Additionally, relationships are being reimagined. The amount of people who are open to having online-only relationships — meaning they never go offline — is increasing, and Cheesewright expects technology will transform these relationships even further.

Infusing sexual tension into gaming is a prime example of this. For remote partners who have never met and might never meet, “Shared gaming experiences with a sexual element might be an opportunity,” Cheesewright says. Similar to phone sex, making gaming sexual ups the ante in the best way. It brings novelty and a sense of co-created intimacy to a real-time, long-distance interaction. And this, in turn, strengthens emotional closeness.

Virtual reality in adult content

Remember when virtual reality (VR) first hit the scene and everyone joked about using it to watch porn? Well, that idea has now become a reality. According to Cheesewright, “Virtual reality remains a huge growth area for the adult content industry, with some numbers showing triple digit growth and some estimates suggesting a third of men who’ve tried VR have used it for sexual content.”

Looking ahead, Cheesewright expects VR — namely VR glasses — will become a regular part of everyday life. If that happens, he suspects “every aspect of sex technology might interoperate with them,” allowing users to roleplay in new ways and so forth. Similarly, Cheesewright predicts dating apps will integrate VR technology as well, potentially allowing users to see matches in 3D before swiping.

Using technology for sexual and emotional fulfillment

Previously, the idea of using robots, avatars, or other forms of artificial intelligence (AI) for any sort of fulfillment was laughable. But now? That idea isn’t so far-fetched. Not only is AI companionship on the rise, but Cheesewright says there’s already an established market for full-body sex robots. So going forward, using AI (think: AI adult performers or chatbots, sex robots, etc.) will likely become more common. Subsequently, watching an adult performer avatar, talking dirty to an AI chatbot, using a sex robot for solo play, and so forth will become more widely accepted.

Long-distance sex and connection

It’s no secret that technology helps couples in long-distance relationships (LDRs) stay connected. Per Gitnux, long-distance couples interact an average of three times per day using some form of technology, with 88% using video calls to communicate and 81% saying technology helps them feel closer to their partner. Furthermore, since LDRs lack physical intimacy, 85% of respondents admit to sexting their partner (you’ve got to keep it spicy somehow, right?).

Going forward, Cheesewright expects technological advancements to further revolutionize LDRs. He says an example of this would be shared virtual environments where partners could essentially “meet up” and feel like they’re together IRL. The beauty of this is that it would foster intimacy and connection, allowing partners to strengthen their bond while living far away from one another.

The integration of sex and tech is further dismantling negative narratives around sex. It’s encouraging healthy exploration in bed, and ultimately making sexual wellness more inclusive and diverse.

Endless options for sexual meetups

Lastly, Cheesewright says metaverse technologies will further “blur the lines between our digital and physical worlds” and subsequently create endless options for sexual meetups. Chances are we’ll eventually have the option to meet up with other humans or avatars in augmented environments. This will not only make it easier to establish connections but also explore fantasies with other curious, like-minded people. Plus, you’ll be able to find spaces where important discussions about sex and desire can unfold safely and without judgment.

The bottom line

Clearly, technology is rapidly changing intimacy. Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t a bad thing. The integration of sex and tech is further dismantling negative narratives around sex. It’s encouraging healthy exploration in bed, and ultimately making sexual wellness more inclusive and diverse.

That said, there is one caveat. We need physical contact to survive. Therefore, solely relying on technology for sexual or emotional fulfillment can backfire. So, don’t neglect your IRL relationships. If you can strike a healthy balance and use tech to your advantage (think: using it to explore fantasies, etc.), your sex life will be all the better for it.
