Summer’s here, people! After over a year of being cooped up in the house, now that things are beginning to return back to (somewhat) normal, it’s time to get out and embrace it! Whether you’re going on a much anticipated vacay, a cookout with family and friends, spending time by the pool or lounging in the sand by the ocean, summer 2021 is all about enjoyment! There’s no denying that this time of year is all about fresh skin and cool, simple, and effortless glam. I know that during the summer both my skincare and makeup routines change a little bit to suit my lifestyle, as I love being and spending time outside as much as possible. Although I’ll usually focus on dewy skin and lighter makeup, I’ll still have my full-glam moments for nights that I go out.

Below I’ve compiled a list of all of my summer 2021 skin and beauty essentials that work for both going out, or staying home. Keep your skin looking fresh AF and your makeup effortless this summer with these summer 2021 skin and beauty essentials.

Summer 2021 Skin and Beauty Essentials:

Lip balm

No one wants chapped lips, and spending time in the sun can seriously dry out every part of your body—including your lips. Keep your lips moisturized and plump this summer with a good lip balm. I always keep one with me, and I use it every morning, periodically throughout the day, and before I go to bed. My lips get chapped really easily, but doing this along with some of my other favorite lip products helps keep my lips full, plump, and hydrated.

Sunscreen/sunscreen face lotion

If you’re going to go out in the sun, you’re going to want to put on SPF. My dermatologist told me that as long as you wear SPF 30 you’ll be OK. On top of all the many reasons sun damage is so bad for you, it’ll also age you faster than anything else. Take care of your skin this summer by making sure you use a good sunscreen or moisturizing sunscreen face lotion like this one from Ulta Beauty daily. P.S: you can still get tan while wearing it 😉

Highlighter

Want glowing skin? Look no further than highlighter. Mix some in with your moisturizer to create a skin tint, drop some in your foundation to make skin shine, use alone over moisturizer on the high points of your face like cheekbones, down the bridge of nose, over the brow bone, and above the Cupid’s bow, or use it normally with your full glam—the choice is yours! My go-to highlighter for summer is this liquid one from L’Oreal Paris. I love it because it’s super lightweight and extremely versatile; it can be built up or toned down depending on which look you’re going for. Either way, it always makes my skin glow.

Micellar water

You’d be amazed at all the dirt your skin picks up all day—even if you’re doing nothing. Being outside more means you’re more likely to pick up excess dirt and grime. Keep skin fresh and clean by double cleansing, starting with micellar water. Micellar water is great because it can be used quickly (like if you’re running outside but want to clean skin off real quick) and it really gets in there and cleans everything. I love using this as my first-step cleanser, especially when taking off makeup or after being outside all day wearing sunscreen. It makes my cleansing process so much better. Plus, it’ll hydrate your skin. Hydrated and clean skin? Say no more.

Bronzer

What would summer be without bronzer? Keep your skin looking sun-kissed all day long with some bronzer. Use it to contour alone, apply it alone on the apples of your cheeks over moisturizer in place of blush (something I will do if I’m wearing no makeup but am seeing people and want a little something), or with makeup. Either way, bronzer is a summertime must-have. I’ve been loving the contour palette from KKW Beauty for this.

Face wash

If you want skin to look clean, moisturized, and fresh, you need to wash your face daily. Having a good face wash is everything, regardless of whether or not you’re double cleansing. Washing your face is one of the most important steps in any skincare routine! I love this milky cleanser from La Roche-Posay. It’s affordable, gentle, hydrating, and seriously gets the job done.

Lip gloss

Lip gloss is great because it can be worn alone with no makeup, with lip liner, or with a full face of glam. Keep your lips shining this summer with the use of both lip balm and lip gloss. I love using gloss in a quick makeup look; it gives off that effortless but sexy vibe. My go-to is this hydrating lip plumper.

Face toner

A lot of people have conflicting opinions on the legitimacy of face toners, but I am a die-hard fan of them. It still amazes me how much grime and buildup my toner will pick up even after double cleansing. Using a face toner after cleansing will help get rid of any excess dirt and grime that you can’t see lurking under the surface. Toner will keep your skin looking even more clean and fresh, and it’ll feel better, too. My favorite is this vanilla milk toner.

Moroccan oil

Repeated swimming in the ocean and/or pools can wreak havoc on your hair. It can seriously dry it out. Keep your hair shiny, full, and healthy by using just a drop Moroccan oil daily. Your hair and hairdresser will thank you. My ride-or-die is from the Moroccanoil brand.

Moisturizer

Of course I had to moisturizer–it’s an absolute must all-year round–but especially in the summer. Your skin needs to replenish itself, and a good moisturizer will do just that. Always look for formulas that contain hyaluronic acid, and any other soothing or plumping ingredients you may need. My go-to is this rose water cream from Garnier; it’s safe for my sensitive skin and so soothing. It keeps my skin looking dewy, hydrated, and plump, and helps prevent the sun from drying out my skin.

Night cream

Last but not least: night cream! Keep your skin extra hydrated and youthful this summer by using a good night cream before bed every night. With the right ingredients, overnight, your skin will replenish itself and retain moisture, and you’ll be looking fresh and young all summer long. I’ve been loving this ultralight facial lotion specifically designed for nighttime by CeraVe. It’s packed with powerhouse ingredients such a niaciminide, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides.
